What research is needed to work with NFTs, cryptocurrencies and the metaverse?

The fields of cryptocurrency, NFTs and the metaverse are gaining in importance. And the job prospects are promising. What kind of research do you need to do to work in these areas?

The bitcoin hack in May last year clearly caused panic among investors. However, the question of getting an education in crypto finance seems less and less absurd as these virtual currencies are now well known. And the question also arises for NFTs, these certificates that confirm the value of a virtual good. In March 2021, the digital artwork was sold at Christie’s for $69.3 million. As for the metaverse, Facebook (Meta) announced in October 2021 that it wants to hire 10,000 highly qualified profiles in Europe to build its metaverse.

Education at an engineering or business school

Is special training required? Most often, Grandes Ecoles offer training available for bac +3. It can be a specialized master’s program or courses within a metaverse focused on PGE (grande école program), cryptocurrencies or NFTs. “Aspects of design, artificial intelligence, machine learning, or even coding are taken up in engineering schools where students are educated and prepared to deploy these new technologies in digital engineering.”, explains François Stephan, Director of the EEC. Esilv also offers a specialization in financial technology. The university is no exception. Since 2019, the Sorbonne has been offering a master’s degree in data fintech.

For their part, business schools have been offering digital finance courses known as “fintech” for several years now, teaching the concepts of cryptocurrencies, blockchain, big data and their applications in the banking and stock sectors. “The goals pursued are quite simple: to prepare our young people for this new commercial aspect of the world of work, to give them the technical skills to work with engineers, and, of course, to encourage them to be entrepreneurial.” Details Natalie Janson, Cryptocurrency Specialist and Professor at Neoma.

Facebook creates its own school with Simplon

Recently, however, there are schools that are 100% dedicated to these sectors. We can mention, for example, the opening in September 2022 of the College of the Metaverse. The institution, owned by the Collège de Paris, located in La Défense, aims to educate the developers, project managers and meta-designers of tomorrow. For its founder and director, Riduan Abagri, the school is “a bet on the future, while France remains the cradle of the metaverse.” The school offers a curriculum starting in Year 3 and focuses on applying the metaverse to the current professional landscape: AI, the luxury market and digital marketing, data science, or even meta-legacy. As for Meta, the Facebook group announced in June the launch of a “metaverse academy” in France, scheduled to open at the start of the 2022 academic year with the Simplon School of Code. The school hopes to recruit 30% of women without a diploma.

In schools, entrepreneurs are also at the start. Clément Faguette, 22, is an engineering student at Ecole Mines-Nancy and co-founded the Deep-Future Collective with David Ferres. This project, whose activity consists in the procedural creation of works of art and their subsequent transformation into NFT, thanks to the support and funding of the school. “Although these topics may still cause doubt and mistrust, the school is listening”Clement says.

Opportunities in all areas

As for outlets, there is something to do here. According to François Stephane, these new technologies are “engineering of the 21st century”. Whether it’s in finance, the arts, or digital marketing, whether it’s a startup or a large group, these skills are becoming more and more in demand. Therefore, we recruit developers, meta-designers and data architects from all over the world. And this is just the beginning. “We will gradually integrate NFT into everyday life,” says Clément Faguette. “Bitcoin has become a real revolution in the global financial system,” adds Natalie Janson. Especially as we will find NFTs, metaverses and cryptocurrencies in more and more different areas: in real estate using “digital twins”, in administration using blockchain-protected virtual identity documents, or even in shipments of all kinds, where authenticity and Compliance of the product with certain criteria can be checked in the NFT form.
