Christel Borie: “Think globally, act locally”, company news

Think globally, act locally.” Launched on the occasion of the first Environment Summit, this inquiry perfectly sums up how we approach the S ESG at Eramet today.

The vocation of the Eramet group is the development of the resources of the Earth; how we collect and transform them is one of the conditions for virtuous economic development and a successful energy transition.

The Group firmly believes that the mining industry of tomorrow will be exemplary in terms of corporate social responsibility…or not. What is at stake is our “right to operate” and our ability to meet the aspirations of our fellow citizens to produce the metals the world needs.

Duty to lead by example

The manifesto of our raison d’être, enshrined in our charters, underscores our full awareness of the emergency our planet finds itself in and the need to continue our efforts for a responsible industry. This confirms our ongoing concern to have a positive impact on the well-being of the women and men who live in our community.

I often emphasize that to develop your business in the host countries, it is no longer enough to be tolerant, you must be loved. This is not a formula, this is what I see every time I go out on the field. The expectations of the people who greet us have changed significantly over the past few years and are pushing us to lead by example.

Thus, Eramet wanted to move from the approach of limiting and compensating the impact of its activities to seeking a net benefit for the population in accordance with its priorities and aspirations.

Action for Youth

This goal can be measured by 2023 based on two goals: 100% of our sites have created a dialogue mechanism, because building mutually beneficial and partnership relationships with communities must be based on information and constant consultation; 100% of our properties have an investment program that promotes local development by encouraging action in favor of youth. These are the youth that we speak directly to when we imagine the industry and technology of tomorrow to secure their future with or without a mine.

It is with this in mind that all of the group’s sites develop community investment programs.

With a partnership approach, priorities are identified and monitored collectively: support for economic activity, action in the field of education, health, sports, culture, updating the infrastructure necessary for local development.

This growing position that S of ESG holds is due to the fact that we are a dedicated company that puts the creation of shared value at the heart of our business.

Requests from our clients

Along with this legitimate expectation, the requirements of our customers have also changed significantly. Two years ago, when we were talking to major car manufacturers about traceability or a responsible value chain, we were distracted in response. The question of the origin of raw materials was of little concern to them: their suppliers were responsible for it.

Today, however, some automotive players are making demands on the origin of raw materials and are making bold decisions, such as banning their cobalt batteries in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where child labor is rampant.

There are our customers, there are those who live near our mines and factories, and there are those who work within the company. Of course, in this quest to highlight S ESG, Eramet employees have not been forgotten: they are the main players in this transformation, our best ambassadors, the first innovators and initiators in these areas.

The pandemic has shown what a supportive and active community they are. We have responsibilities to them: to keep them safe and healthy, as we do to our subcontractors, and to offer them the best possible professional development through assignment rewards and training throughout their careers; while respecting their diversity, which is a great source of wealth.

At the same time, the concept of “living well together” cannot and should not be a roadmap only for our Western societies. Eramet is a company that contributes not only to solving issues of common interest, but also to creating value wherever it is present.

S ESG concerns the entire planet. It is precisely because we keep this commitment in mind that we strive to become a benchmark in the responsible transformation of the earth’s mineral resources.
